Getting Started with Viettel Fiber

Viettel is Vietnam's largest telecommunications provider and offers fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband across most of the country. After the installation technician sets up the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) device, you'll need to configure your router to connect to the internet. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Understanding Your Viettel Setup

A typical Viettel fiber installation consists of:

  • ONT/Modem: The fiber terminal box installed by the technician (often a Huawei or ZTE unit)
  • Router: Either built into the ONT or a separate device (TP-Link, Tenda, or Viettel-branded)
  • PPPoE credentials: Username and password provided at sign-up

In many Viettel installations, the ONT already has a built-in Wi-Fi router. However, many users prefer to connect a separate router for better range or features.

Finding Your Viettel PPPoE Credentials

Your PPPoE credentials were provided when you signed up for Viettel broadband. They are typically found:

  • In your service contract document
  • In a welcome SMS or email from Viettel
  • By calling Viettel customer support at 18008098
  • Through the My Viettel app (available on Android and iOS)

The username is usually in the format: phonenumber@viettel.vn or phonenumber@vtnet.vn

Configuring a Separate Router with Viettel Fiber

Step 1: Connect Hardware

Use an Ethernet cable to connect your router's WAN port to one of the LAN ports on the Viettel ONT. Power on both devices.

Step 2: Log Into Your Router Admin Panel

Access your router's admin panel (typically at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and log in with your router's admin credentials.

Step 3: Set Internet Connection Type to PPPoE

  1. Navigate to WAN Settings or Internet Settings
  2. Select PPPoE as the connection type
  3. Enter your Viettel PPPoE username and password
  4. Set Connect on Demand or Always On
  5. Save and apply settings

Step 4: Configure DNS (Optional but Recommended)

For faster browsing, consider using public DNS servers instead of Viettel's defaults:

DNS ProviderPrimary DNSSecondary DNS
Google DNS8.8.8.88.8.4.4
Cloudflare DNS1.1.1.11.0.0.1
Viettel Default(auto-assigned)(auto-assigned)

Optimizing Your Viettel Connection

  • Choose the right plan: Viettel offers plans from basic broadband to gigabit fiber. Make sure your plan matches your household's needs.
  • Position the ONT carefully: The fiber cable must not be bent sharply — this can degrade signal quality.
  • Avoid double NAT: If your Viettel ONT already has Wi-Fi routing enabled, connecting another router can create "double NAT" issues. Either disable Wi-Fi on the ONT or set your second router to Access Point mode.
  • Test your speed: Use fast.com or speedtest.net to verify you're getting close to your subscribed speed.

Common Viettel Connection Problems

  • PPPoE authentication error: Verify credentials carefully — they are case-sensitive. Call 18008098 if unsure.
  • ONT showing red light: This usually means a fiber signal issue. Contact Viettel technical support — it's likely a line problem.
  • Slow speeds despite fast plan: Check for Wi-Fi interference, connected device count, and whether your router supports your plan's maximum speed.

With the right configuration, Viettel fiber delivers reliable and fast internet. If you run into persistent issues, Viettel's technical support team is generally responsive and available around the clock.
